Headlines like “Paris Hilton Goes to Jail” and “Lindsay Lohan Drives Drunk” often steals the national media attention at the expense of life threatening events whether in the United States or relating to the U.S. involvement in world affairs, especially in Iraq. Once every three months, a leading Democrat will get a hunch to heat the Republican defenses with the burning issue of Iraq and how long it will take for our sons and daughters to get back home. On Tuesday August 14, the suicide bombings in Northern Iraq with the death tolls heaping up to 500 or more, (apparently then deadliest in recent years) gives us an insight into the peace, democracy and the freedom that the global community is fighting for. But only Gen. David Petraeus has the mandate of Congress to assess the damage, so until his report clearly advises against either a full surge or a complete withdrawal from Iraq: - “so help us God.” Until then, we can only hope that such mindless acts of terrorism and the Bin Laden associates live somewhere between the ‘shadows’ and ‘nowhere’.The roller coaster state of Iraq had its flashes on CNN, C-SPAN and FOX News, but that was until Nicole Richie allegedly became pregnant, Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s performance on the You Tube Democratic debate and David Beckam arrived in America; and we were back to business as usual. The crossroad argument to bring the troops home took a backseat, at least as far as the ordinary American is concerned, until another marine is shipped back home ‘ice cold’ to his wife and children. Since the invasion of Iraq (I prefer “Operation Iraqi Freedom” as was the caption on FOX News for a month before it changed again to “War on Terror”), of course many civilians and military personnel have lost their lives, a casualty that is often attributed to war no matter how legitimate or otherwise. In the wake of recent events in Iraq and even the Middle East as a whole, the global community is forced to find answers from either UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon or any one with a world changing idea(including my friend Stephen Colbert); and the sooner the better.
According to senior U.S. General, “the Tuesday truck bombs that targeted the villages of Qahtaniya, al-Jazeera and Tal Uzair, in northern Iraq near the border with Syria, were a "trademark al Qaeda event" designed to sway U.S. public opinion against the war”, "break the will" of the American people and show that the U.S. troop escalation -- the "surge" -- is failing.
Welcome to the world of subjective reasoning. However you look at it, the situation in Iraq gets complicated by the day and irrespective of whether the United States approach is illegitimate or ill advised, something has to be done in Iraq, and has to be done fast.
“Tensions already exist between Yazidis and local Muslims - and an impending regional referendum is adding to the difficulties.” Whether or not the United States (or the coalition Forces) presence in the region will be enough to curtail such violence, is up in the air; your guess is as good as mine. The terrorist’s threat to human life is interwoven in the difficulty of narrowing a search to a specific country, region or area. Al Qaeda networks are ruthless, and for whatever their reasons are, I cannot think of any justification to kill hundreds of innocent people anywhere whether, Sunnis, Shites, Yadzis or anyone for that matter.
The scary thought is” three suicide trucks carrying two tons of explosives” could very well be anywhere and in fact anytime. At least now we know that the war on terror is a long way from being over; but I really hope I am wrong.

In a nutshell this bloodshed and barbaric killing would not have happened if US didnt invade. No one(we the West) was too bothered when this was happening under Sadaams rein. We just let it happen. US invaded for oil, FULL STOP. Bush is just another terrorist, suited and booted.
Come one folks when will you realize that the country that killed its Natives, dropped a nuke and supplys arms to countrys is the soul cause of this atrocity. Without havoc there is no power, no power=no US influence
"Whatever the rights or wrongs of the US/UK invasion of Iraq you should not forget how evil Saddam was."
Whatever the rights or wrongs of Saddam's rule, you should not forget how evil the bombing, torture, and slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis, all so the US/UK could control the oil.
Peace in the Middle East???? Wake me up in 10 years dude. .
Muslims opposed Saddams rule and were killed and tortured with the full support of the US. Iraq is not free, they still suffer death and atrocities every day to a greater scale AND their country is overrun by foreign occupiers and terrorists. US history is proof they care not for Iraqis
Religious idiocy causes these people so many problems. We should leave them alone until they evolve into decent human beings who are tolerant of other beliefs, feelings and cultures.
It is hard to imagine that Iraqis, regardless of religious affiliations, can do this to each other. Equally hard to believe is that the US Military has enough "surges" in reserve to establish and maintain a presence everywhere at all times. If we could only turn back the clock just after Afghanistan and "measure twice and cut once", as it were, we would be far better off today
And by the way Mr. Edmonds I really hope you are wrong too. NIce article
I blame every action of the insurgency on the door of Bush, Blair and their warmongering supporters.
An insight into the mind of a fascist, if ever there was one!
Textbook Al-Qaeda rhetoric straight from the horses mouth.
The war was wrong but that doesn't excuse the mindless murder committed by the insurgency.
I see some people are blaming sectarian violence on the US/UK presence in Iraq. So let's just get out and the nasty little xenophobes can get on with slaughtering each other at the behest of their masters, Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia. Why should our troops be killed to save a bunch of ignoramii who keep moaning about our efforts? Arab peace-making volunteers, one step forward! Where'd everybody go? Hello? Anybody there? (and it IS partially about oil, but so what? that's grown-up politics ppl)
If this is truly about the occupation, why aren't the Muslim extremists targeting US soldiers instead of blowing up innocent women & children?
The claims that Islam is the "religion of peace" look hollower & hollower by the day. When was the last time we saw a Quaker suicide bomber?
This is a sign that worse things would happen if the US troops were not present or are withdrawn.
This also means that the world is savagely uncivilized.
The U S troop surge achieves very little. This is a good example of Guerrilla Warfare " when the U S advance, they withdraw, when the U S withdraw, they advance"
when Baghdad gets a little progress, insurgents bombed the far away Kurd area, when U S try to chase them, they may come back to Baghdad.
These Generals and politicians should understand that, without political solution there is no win. U S can stay there for the next 50 years running around with these mad guys. Good luck
As was said in an article I read this morning, the most recent US surge of troops in Iraq is all about politics, nothing more. George Bushy Bush is only looking after his "legacy", he doesn’t care about the Iraqi people, or for that matter what happens to them. In next months report on Iraq, which I am sure will be heavily edited, the administration wants to convince the American people we have turned a corner in the war. Who are they trying to kid? Our mind's are already made up Bush, sorry.
"Get real; Arabs have been killing each other for century’s.
There are so many different religions in Iraq, this is bound to happen. Although these attacks are cowardly and do not represent Islam.
How vile. How cowardly. How inhumane and uncivilized they have become in the cradle of civilization. There is no one to blame but the perpetrators.
How many more bombings like this are going to happen until people realize Iraq needs to be split up, have tight border controls on the new independent states. Sorry to break it to you "embrace diversity" people, but people don't mix very well. 500 people were murdered by insane terrorists because people can move around in Iraq, and they all hate each other. Split up the country if you care so much about life.
This is the consequence of the invasion of Iraq writ large.
After that brutal stoning to death of the teenage girl by fellow Yazidis including her own family I have not one iota of sympathy for them.
Wasn’t Iraq less violent under Saddam?
Yes of course, apart from the millions he killed, everybody else in Iraq was happy.
Get real; Arabs have been killing each other for centuries.
There is so many different religions in Iraq, this is bound to happen. Although these attacks are cowardly and do not represent Islam.
What we are seeing is very similar to the ex Yugoslavia after the fall of the wall. Here the wall was Saddam. This is a known situation for every artificially held country. By now, and I agree with most posters, the only thing I see is occupiers out and Europe, Russia and China to deal with security. Maybe a few Iraqis and a few US soldiers will be saved. But act quick.
I hope you are wrong also. The last thing we need in the region is senseless killings like this. absolutely ridiculous
Just answer one thing . Was the world more in turmoil than the humanitarian crisis all over when there was no Bush and his pre-emptive agenda in force?
Answer honestly and you will know the picture.
Its a real mess! The invasion of Iraq was based on falsehood. There were no WMD and Al Qaeda didnt even have a toehold there. Now hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are martyred. They live like animals fearing violence.I want to ask who has benefited from this War?Cant we take some action to stop this Genocide? The world is going about its Business as usual showing apathy.Have we lost our sense of conscience and feeling?Brothers and Sisters, kindly wake up and stop this Massacre!God,be Merciful please!
Its ridiculous to generalize in these circumstances, people using the word 'muslim' and blaming 'muslims' and so on, these are sects and here you have a terrorist group al-qaeda with its own warped state of beliefs. And why should the (selfish) arab nations step up when theyre not the ones who started this? there was no al-qaeda or WMD's in Iraq to begin with, This is an illegal war if there is such a term and these are the consequences. Bush and Alqaeda seem to be two sides of the same coin.
You would rather shut your eyes to the atrocities doled out by Saddam and his sons, yet not under the media glare currently on Iraq, than see your fellow Muslims free from the yoke of tyranny? Answer honestly and you will know your heart.
i believe the troop surge is working to stop the violence but us troops can't be everywhere at once so for once can the people stop saying bad things about the us and the us military and support the war to exterminate the terrorists even if the democrats take power in America they will find that it will be very difficult to abundant the people of iraq by retreating from Iraq we already tried to arrange talks between the different factions in Iraq but it did not work
Civilian deaths in Iraq can all be attributed to the invasion of foreign islamists from surrounding countries, hell-bent on their delusional "jihad" against the civilized world. So much for their islam being a religion of peace...
I am surprised people are still getting this confused after all these years. mr edmonds, these are not "militants" nor "insurgents". These people are called terrorists. They are criminals and terrorists and they should be labelled as they are!
I feel strongly that the US could be doing a far better job of showing ignorant people how freedom works. Let a person believe in what they believe . Find ways to show these people God is not patting them on the back. The Murderous leaders of these insane acts need smart approach to a possible alternative in believing God is going to be kind to you for blowing up innocent people because of their religion. God is not religion. All religion is human made.
If something is not done in Iraq, one day in the future we would look at our map and say there once laid Iraq.
Let’s face it, a stable government is not going to be established in Iraq, the coalition politicians are looking for an exit strategy, let’s leave as quickly as we can. That way we’d also see if the coalition forces are the problem or if the sectarian (religious) violence continues.
The coalition forces should be sent to reinforce Afghanistan. Saddam was unfinished Bush family business.
To lose in Afghanistan would mean the Taliban back in Govt. and Al Quada training camps back in business
The sheer arrogance & deceit of the men who were determined to wage war against Iraq, notwithstanding the consequences, is almost beyond belief. The situation has now spun completely out of control & even if the US were to deploy a million men there, it cannot be retrieved. Those men will never answer for their actions (crimes?) & that doesn't reflect well on the West. Where now are Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, Adelman & Co? Bush is left holding the can & that is perhaps poetic justice.
