A Peaceful World Beyond Religion

Until the end of time, the differences that exist in the diversity of religions might be the very dividing line for which we fight to avoid. Christianity over the years have had its share of the blame for various reasons, so is Islam. At some point what we believe, minus the biases we have formed from own value systems could help us understand each other. And Im thinking from a solely optimistic point of view. Understand each other? Well thats only necessary so that we dont wipe each other of the face of planet earth; an act that we are already on the fastrack to.
In recent days, more than 130 Muslim scholars have written to Pope Benedict, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Christian leaders urging greater understanding between the two faiths.

The premise here is that world peace could depend on improved relations between the major religious faiths. The letter identifies similarities in both religions, such as the requirements to accept only one god and live in peace with one's neighbours.
In some schools of thought, Christainity, Islam and Judaism are all monothestic, abrahamic religions. All three religions have many similarities, they have differences, advantages and disadvatages. During this epoch, no-one respects no-one. Most people hate certain religions, a significant amount of people are anti-semitic, islamophobic and racist but still they proclaim it is "freedom of speech". We have truly entered the age of ignorance in style therefore the best solution is for these religions to unite against the subconscious hatred. Or in some cases the balatant dislike for opposing and conflicting ideologies.

People choose religion based on faith rather than logic, so any attempt to argue with religious believers using logic is doomed to failure. Tolerant believers will support attempts to improve inter-faith relations; intolerant ones won't. This applies as much to sects (Catholic v Protestant, Sunni v Shia) as Christian v Jew v Muslim. Religions may well result in some good but are still based on superstition and, frequently, conflict.

I pray for the peace of the world, and I pray to my God of Heaven. Call him Allah, Yahweh, or any name you chose buty until we find the common strings that bind us all together as human beigns, our pyaers wont mean much.

Hey eric I read your blog always, but sometimes you get a little too deep for me. . lol. . . To be honest, when I hear Muslims say they don't feel they can integrate into Western society because of its decadence, its lack of respect and its love affair for excessive amounts of alcohol, I feel something in common with them that transcends culture, race or religion. It's not a matter of finding common ground between the faiths, it's about finding common ground between everyone, regardless of religion.

There is no evidence that God exists. There is equally no evidence that God does NOT exist.

There is no problem with religion the only problem that exists is people believe it.

Why, in the 21st century, are we still bothering with ramblings from a region of the world which is a splendid example of why we should not adhered to these religions in the first place ! I suppose we should be lucky as it could have been flying carpets and genies we could have been worshoping for centuries....

We have no other problem than the tension created by the religious believes. The two or more believers should be brought to the one channell by create a dialogue in which all of them must participate. The mobilization of believes/religion is the major setback to all human activities. We will never go smoothly without the accepting of how we can deal first for the matter of religious matters. Let try to bring them to the dialogue and accept whoever believe what to participate.

The other guys coment is ridiculous. ive heard it so much that I didnt think people still held that same arugument. .

There is no evidence that Dragons exist. There is equally no evidence that Drogons do NOT exist.

There is no evidence that the celestial teapot exists. There is equally no evidence that the celestial teapot does NOT exist.

There is no evidence that the invisible pink unicorn exists. There is equally no evidence that the invisible pink unicorn does NOT exist.
Similarly, there is no evidence that pixies, goblins or leprechauns do not exist but it is obvious (even to the meanest of intellects) that they don’t.

In other words, the evidence that God does not exist IS that there is no evidence.

Dude you got some weird people writing on this blog. Most wars have been caused by religious intolerance, so of course we need more understanding of various faiths. What we don't need is tolerance of those who want to convert us to their religion through violence and then bleat that they are being victimised by tougher security action brought about to protect us from their extreme views.

The long "theological" letter is irrelevent as it keeps on repeating "unity" of God, indirectly criticising the Christian doctrine of the divinity of Christ. They left out numerous passages in the Quran advocating violence to "kafirs" including Christians and Jews and justified by many of the Islamic terrorists. Can they point out any such teaching by Jesus in the New Testament? Can they help the situation of the Christians persecuted in Islamic countries especially those converts?

There is no God
There is no Mohammed
Problem solved.

I don't need to believe in God to be able to live in peace with my neighbours. Indeed, I have one less reason or excuse to persecute them. Islam and Christianity are both peaceful, understanding faiths. Unfortunately, it's people's interpretation of them that is misguided and belligerent.

Your belief in no God is a belief itself. So basically atheism is a religion. What you want is everyone to believe what you believe.
So, problem not solved.

Muslim scholars - world peace - understanding between religions, all in the same sentence! Pull the other one, it's got rosary beads on it!

Kuffars or non-believers can't even enter the cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, so for Muslim scholars to ask for understanding and tolerance, with the veiled threat that this understanding is essential for world peace, just stinks of hypocrisy.

How come Hindus, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and Jews all get along?

Any such development has to be helpful. There is so much misunderstanding and distrust of the unfamiliar. Anything which improves understanding and relations between the world's religions must be welcome. The majority of the believers in all the monotheistic religions are good, well-meaning people, and it is such a pity that there are not more such people. Unfortunately it is only minority fundamentalist and extreme groups which give these religions a bad name which they do not deserve.

this was a deep and no doubt controversial topic...it's interesting b/c there's a teahouse in Sedona, AZ owned by this Native American couple....on the front door is a story about this man and woman in the forest...as you read on you find that it is eerily reminiscent of the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden - except they had different names....I think that is when i realized that regardless of culture, the founding religion of that culture carrie dsimilar ideologies to christianity...that is by no means saying that christianity was the first true religion and all came after - i'm not that egocentric...Christianity is MY truth...but the fact that the stories were so similar just drove home the point for me that all this religious intolerance folks love to spew is ridiculous and pointless - since they seem to have many of the same tenets...

World peace can be accomplished, no matter what anyone may tell you. People, as individuals, make the decision to hate other individuals. To attribute this to God or any other diety is simply foolish. And to anyone who thinks that their religion is the be-all end-all, and that non-believers should be destroyed, converted, or driven from "your" lands, search your soul and find the fear that resides there. Mohammed, Christ, Buddha, Abraham...none of these men let fear hold and control them.

No, there should be greater understanding between people. The United States and its 'Allies' are fighting for money whilst the East is fighting to preserve its life, culture and dignity. Islam has been used as a skapegoat to dig out riches (oil) in the east, just like they dug out the riches (diamonds) in Africa. So i suggest the west re-thinks its excuses. Crusades on Muslims are no newer than those in the middle ages, try not to forget that, except the US leads it this time

If these scholars want to earn some credbility: They will immedaitely denouce Iran's supreme Aytholah on his urging of Arabs nations to boycott the U.S Mid East confrence.

In fact they should publicly condemn him and the Mullahs as one of the main problems of discord among the religions

These imams want more tolerance in the west so that they can build more mosques in Europe. I'll feel more tolerant when I hear imams preaching against violence in their own communitites, from Copenhagen to Kartoum. And I'll feel more understanding when imams preach tolerance and acceptance of other religions. Until then, I'd like to remind them of the behavior of their co-religionists on 9/11 and 7/7 and ask is what they want us to "understand" and "tolerate"?

The Muslims who sent the letter to the Vatican are no more correct than Christians world-wide who judge others. "Islamic Terrorists" are not true Muslims, either. No one said anything when Italy was a theocracy, however flawed. We must relegate sprituality to a personal level, and keep our noses out of others lives. To infer world peace depends on understanding is pure folly and negates the responsiblity of those perpetuating war. Its time for the civilized world to wake up and fly straight.

Both Christianity and Islam is based on fear of god. The prophets have set guide lines and practices that have to be strictly observed without question. Both say there is one god but each religion considers its god the ONE GOD. The clash begins here. Both religions interfere in the personal lives of devotees and dictate what shoud be done and what not. The only region that allows free thinking and freedom to question is Buddhism. They should take an example from that great religion.

not all muslims are loonies and want to kill everyone against islam, but it is just the minority that are having a big impact on the world, islam is a religion of equality this is the reason Muhammed Ali converted to islam.

Good heavens (!). This is the twenty-first century. Shouldn't we be waking up all faiths to the reality of this world? After all, when it comes to Odin, Woden, Fairies et al we are all atheists. Let's speak up against the nonsense that underpins every religion. Catholic, CofE, Islam. None have anything to be proud of and none are based on rational reasoning. Let's stop showing deference to narrow minded thinkers and build a better future for our children
